Welcome to the first episode of Ka Leo ʻŌiwi, the newest Hawaiian language learning series. Join Hina, Pōmaikaʻi, and ʻIwalani as they practice ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi, go on huakaʻi, and kanikapila with some of our favorite musicians! After a few lessons, youʻll start to notice how our ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi is all around us.
This first episode includes an introduction to the Pīʻāpā Hawaiʻi (Hawaiian alphabet); ʻOkina and Kahakō; Ka and Ke; and Kāhulu (descriptive words). We’ll also practice what we learned by discovering out the meanings behind some of Oʻahu’s most well-known street names. Finally, our first musical guest Kama Hopkins stops by for a few mele.
Many of the lessons covered in Ka Leo ʻŌiwi are included in Nā Kai ʻEwalu, by Kauanoe Kamanā and Pila Wilson. To order a copy of the book, visit Hale Kuamoʻo.
Ka Leo ʻŌiwi provides a foundation in the Hawaiian language through engagement, interaction, and making the learner a part of the lesson through lohe (hear), ʻoni (act), and walaʻau (speak). Additionally, the individual learner sets the pace. If you missed a lesson, watch the episode again at your convenience on ʻŌiwiTV.

Aue! Something is the matter with Ka Leo `Oiwi – Episode 1. Shortly after the 15 minute mark the screen goes green. I back it up and it happened every time. Also, I have watched this episode several times and it never happened before.

Aloha,
I was thrilled to discover your series, but I can’t get any of the episodes even to start playing. I can down load the worksheets, which are really helpful, but I need to hear olelo hawaii spoken so that I can learn correct pronunciation. As you might imagine, that’s a difficult matter in West Kelowna, British Columbia, Canada. Any advice?
Mahalo nui loa,

I was very happy to find the television station to help me learn the Hawaiian language. However, when I start lesson 1 on the tv, it switches to lesson 13 about 3 seconds into the lesson. Luckily, I am able to listen to lesson 1 on my computer and iPhone. Mahalo
