Nā Leo i ka Makani – Voices in the Wind

“E hoʻolohe i nā leo o nā kūpuna.”

With the help and mentorship of ʻŌiwi TV and Shawn Pimental, Kaʻaumoana Vaughan-Darval, a recent graduate of Hālau Kū Mana, produced this music video for her senior project. It honors her late grandfather, Palani Vaughan and reminds us to “listen to the voices of our ancestors.”

With a medley of mele strung together, this video features various musicians and members of the Vaughan ʻohana.

A message from Kaʻaumoana:

“My grandfather was a living breathing figure of Hawaiian Renaissance, who dedicated his music career to the monarchs and history of Hawaii. My papa, as I would call him, has touched so many people through his music, including me. Due to his passing, I decided that I wanted to create a music video of his song, “Voices on the Wind”, a song especially meaningful to me because it talks about the special connection between a grandparent and a grandchild. Our grandparents and our ancestors speak to us, and if we listen a little more closely to things we can still hear them in the wind, and in the whispering sea, for they are one with the ‘āina.

I hope this video can inspire the younger generation to value their relationships with their kupuna because you never know when they are going to be gone. This video is a continuation of my papa’s legacy to educate people through music, and to empower the Lāhui of Hawai’i.”

Ka’amoana Vaughan your grandfather smiles down from heaven every time he hears this tribute, because you did a marvelous job and you can be very proud of yourself. Your grandfather not only younger generations about the history of Hawaii, but anyone even people like me who is not from Hawaii who are willing to really listen and learn. Indeed Palani Vaughan was a great teacher and through his music we, his fans, learned quite a bit of the Hawaiian history and values. Aloha ke Akua.
