On 31 October 2011, the State Department of Transportation and the Polynesian Voyaging Society came together to dedicate a navigational star compass that links modern day travelers to the ancient Polynesian seafarers. Located on the concourse linking the interisland, domestic, and international terminals, the compass is a reminder for both kamaʻāina and malihini alike of Hawaiʻi’s rich nautical history. The compass is the most recent addition to a series of improvements to display Hawaiian culture, language, and history at the state’s airports.
