One of seven traditional fishponds located in Kona, Kalāhuipuaʻa is a testament to the ingenuity and sophistication of the traditional Hawaiian aquaculture system. The high level of loko iʻa design and tools such as the makahā (sluice gates) allowed for a balanced and continuous supply of fish, which supported a large population.
