What many people who watch the annual Merrie Monarch Festival don’t think about is how the many hula hālau raise the money to travel to Hilo each year. The cost of airfare, transportation, lodging, and meals can really add up. Some hālau have become expert fundraisers and its a great backstory to the actual competition.
