In 2016, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution proclaiming 2019 as the “International Year of Indigenous Languages”. On Friday, February 8th, 2019, Gov. David Ige and Lt. Gov. Josh Green followed suit and proclaimed 2019 as the “Year of Indigenous Languages” for the State of Hawaiʻi.
Hawaiian language is the indigenous language of Hawaiʻi, as well as an official state language of Hawaiʻi. The purpose of these proclamations is to draw attention to the critical loss of Indigenous languages and the urgent need to preserve, revitalize, and promote Indigenous languages.
