Pele, the fire goddess, leaves Tahiti to find her own land where she can preserve the sacred flame. Digging her way along the Hawaiian island chain, she is chased by her angry sister, Nāmaka, who consistently floods her efforts. After moving her way down the chain, she finally finds refuge on the island of Hawai‘i.
